Founded in Reykjavík, Iceland by three game industry veterans, Sólfar Studios’s mission is to create and publish VR games that set the bar as the leader in virtual reality entertainment. In Death is a VR shooter set in a procedurally generated medieval world of floating ruins, where forsaken souls, angelic hordes and demons alike have run wild.

We were given the opportunity to explore design concepts for a second screen companion application and also look at games brand identity and visual language.

CONCEPT DESIGN

After playing the game and watching other's play, it was clear that the tone of the game was quite eerie and sombre. Not like your average thrill a minute shoot em' up. The main element of the game used for navigating and shooting is a bow and arrow, straight away I felt like this was great place to begin sketching.

The iterations below play with depth and space, two elements that as gamer, you feel as you play the game. I also wanted to touch on the dramatic and cinematic vibe within the logo design, giving the game a more premium look and feel, feeling more like a movie title.

The final iterations, build from a few shapes, create a word mark that felt a little more like an old serif but with a modern twist, especially when combined with imagery and graphical elements (like the brandboard above).

UI EXPLORATION

The idea behind the companion experience is for players to easily view their game stats and progress and also take part in the wider community. The nature of these screens means that elements of the design need to both convey scores and numeric information but also help upsell and showcase elements of the game experience.  

Working with the same design principles mentioned above, the visual design for the UI is has that same sense of depth and calmness. Generous use of space, crafted iconography and modern typefaces help contribute to an overall look and feel that feels game like, yet grown up and mature.

The project took around 3 weeks and was delivered as presentation to the Sólfar team who were impressed with the thought process and execution of the work.
